Scripture: Genesis 35:1–5
In Genesis 35:1, God said unto Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there.” Bethel was the place of encounter, covenant, and worship. But before Jacob and his household could return to Bethel, something had to be removed. They could not go up to the place of divine encounter while still carrying strange gods.
Jacob therefore said unto his household, “Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments” (Genesis 35:2). This was a call to repentance, separation, and renewed consecration. The strange gods represented divided loyalty, hidden compromise, and anything that had taken the place of God in their hearts.
The same call comes to us today. Before we can truly experience fresh fellowship with God, we must put away every strange god. A strange god may not always be an image of wood or stone; it can be pride, greed, secret sin, unforgiveness, materialism, ungodly relationships, or anything we trust, love, or obey more than the Lord.
Jacob’s household obeyed. They gave unto Jacob “all the strange gods which were in their hand” (Genesis 35:4). True repentance is not merely spoken; it is demonstrated. They did not hide the idols, excuse them, or carry them along. They surrendered them completely.
After this act of consecration, they journeyed, and “the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them” (Genesis 35:5). When God’s people put away strange gods and walk in obedience, they come under divine covering. God defends those who return to Him with a clean heart.
Devotional Thought:
God is calling us to put away every strange god and return fully to Him. Whatever competes with His lordship must be surrendered. The way back to Bethel begins with cleansing, obedience, and undivided devotion.
Prayer:
Lord, search my heart and reveal every strange god that has taken Your place in my life. Give me the grace to put away every idol, every compromise, and every divided loyalty. Cleanse me, renew me, and bring me back to the place of true worship and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
