COUNTED WORTHY: THE HONOUR OF SUFFERING FOR CHRIST

Text: Acts 5:41 (KJV)
“And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.”
Devotional Thought
The response of the apostles in Acts 5 is one of the most remarkable demonstrations of Christian faith in Scripture. Having been arrested, threatened, and beaten for preaching the gospel, they left the council not discouraged, bitter, or fearful, but rejoicing. Their joy was not in the pain they endured but in the privilege they had been granted—to suffer for the name of Jesus Christ.
In a world that equates blessing with comfort and success, the apostles reveal a deeper spiritual reality. They understood that suffering for Christ is not a sign of God’s abandonment but often evidence of our identification with Him. The same Lord who was mocked, rejected, and crucified had called them to follow in His steps.
To be “counted worthy” does not mean that suffering earns God’s favor. Rather, it means God has deemed His servants faithful enough to bear witness to Christ even in adversity. Their suffering became a testimony of their devotion and a confirmation of their union with their Savior.
The Christian life is not exempt from opposition. Standing for truth may invite criticism. Living a holy life may lead to misunderstanding. Proclaiming Christ may result in rejection. Yet Scripture teaches that when believers endure such trials for Christ’s sake, they participate in the fellowship of His sufferings and share in the honor of bearing His name.
The apostles rejoiced because they viewed suffering through heaven’s perspective. What the world considered shame, they considered honor. What their persecutors intended as punishment, God transformed into a badge of faithful discipleship.
Today, believers are called to adopt the same perspective. Rather than asking, “Why am I suffering?” we may ask, “How can Christ be glorified through this trial?” When our hardships come as a consequence of faithfulness to Jesus, we can take comfort in knowing that God sees, sustains, and rewards His servants.

Do I view opposition for Christ as a burden or as an opportunity to honor Him?
How do I respond when my faith is challenged, mocked, or misunderstood?
Am I willing to remain faithful even when obedience to Christ carries a cost?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the privilege of belonging to Jesus Christ. Grant me the grace to stand firm in faith when trials and opposition arise. Help me never to be ashamed of the gospel but to rejoice in every opportunity to honor Your name. Give me strength to endure hardship with humility, courage to remain faithful under pressure, and joy that comes from knowing I am identified with Christ. May my life bring glory to You whether in comfort or in suffering.
