The Wisdom to Know What Knowledge Alone Cannot Tell You
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Knowledge tells you what.
Understanding tells you why.
Wisdom tells you what to do with it.
You can possess information and still make disastrous decisions. You can know Scripture and yet misunderstand God’s dealings with you. You can hear what someone says and completely miss what they mean. You can have opportunities before you and still choose the wrong door.
Understanding is the ability to see beneath the surface.
Solomon did not merely say, “Get knowledge.” He said, “with all thy getting get understanding.” Because knowledge without understanding can become dangerous. Facts can fill the head while ignorance remains in the heart.
The disciples heard Jesus repeatedly speak about His death and resurrection, yet they did not understand what He was saying. Later, He opened their understanding:
“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.”

There are seasons when what you need is not another sermon, another book, another prophecy, or more information.
You need understanding.
Understanding will teach you when to speak and when to remain silent.
It will help you distinguish a genuine opportunity from a dangerous distraction.
It will keep you from judging people by appearances.
It will help you recognize what God is doing even when you cannot yet explain it.
The tragedy of knowing without understanding
Pharaoh saw the miracles but hardened his heart.
The Pharisees knew the Scriptures but missed Christ.
Judas walked with Jesus but never understood His heart.
It is possible to be close to truth and still far from its meaning.
Therefore, do not merely ask God, “Give me more.”
Ask Him, “Help me understand what You have already given me.”
“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart…”

Prayer
Lord, give me an understanding heart. Deliver me from the blindness of knowledge without wisdom. Teach me to discern what is beneath the surface, to understand Thy Word, Thy dealings, Thy purposes and the seasons of my life. Let me not merely know more—let me understand better and live wisely. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
