Text: “For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” — Hebrews 13:14 (KJV)
Devotional Thought
Every human being is on a journey. We build homes, pursue careers, accumulate possessions, and establish relationships, yet God’s Word reminds us that we have no continuing city here. This world is temporary. No matter how comfortable or successful our lives may become, we are merely pilgrims passing through.
The writer of Hebrews points our attention beyond the present world to “one to come”—the eternal city prepared by God for those who love Him. The reality of eternity confronts every person with a profound question:
Where do you wish to spend eternity?
God has given every individual the freedom to choose. He does not force anyone into His kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, He has provided the way of salvation and eternal life. The choice before us is not merely about religion or morality; it is about our eternal destination.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (KJV). Eternal life is found in Christ alone. Those who receive Him as Lord and Saviour inherit the eternal city whose builder and maker is God. Those who reject Him choose separation from God for eternity.
The temporary nature of life should inspire us to examine our priorities. Are we living only for earthly achievements, or are we preparing for eternity? The things of this world will pass away, but our souls will live forever.
One day, every earthly city, nation, and kingdom will fade, but the heavenly city will remain forever. The wisest decision anyone can make is to choose Christ and live each day with eternity in view.
Reflection Questions
Am I investing more in temporary things than in eternal matters?
Have I personally accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour?
If my earthly journey ended today, where would I spend eternity?
Am I helping others prepare for eternity as well?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that this world is not my permanent home. Help me to live with eternity in view and to set my affection on things above. I choose to follow Jesus Christ, the way to eternal life. Keep my heart focused on Your heavenly kingdom and help me lead others to the hope found in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Key Takeaway
Life is temporary, but eternity is forever. Since we have no continuing city here, let us choose Christ and seek the city that is to come. — “For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” (Hebrews 13:14 KJV)
